Networking & Backbone Services

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Brief Description

TNS provides a service that allows network computers to be dynamically configured. This service can be used to allow the customer to attach to geographically/physically different LAN segments. This service may also be used to help the customer reuse scarce network resources, like IP addresses or LAN ports. This service may also be used to regulate access to a LAN. The service is implemented on a per LAN segment basis. The computer using this service is configured just after connecting to the LAN segment. The computer is configured for fixed lease time, usually short enough to allow for convenient reuse of the IP address assigned. The LAN administrator using this service has control over the parameters configured.

Any computer user on a Penn State network can benefit from and use the service. However, only network administrators listed in the contacts list may request the service be configured on those particular interfaces for which they want dynamic configuration and for which they are responsible. The DHCP service is not offered directly to end users, therefore, prospective users must correspond with their network administrator listed on the contacts list  Locked Content. Additionally, the DHCP service requires a TNS backbone connection and a network attached computer with the appropriate software. TNS does not provide the software but provides pointers to it.
